MARINE PROTECTED AREA - THE SHELLS OF TOR PATERNO IN TORVAIANICA - POMEZIA
The only Marine Protected Area in Italy as well as in the Mediterranean - not directly bordering any stretch of coast.
Within the framework of the Marine Protected Areas, the Secche di Tor Paterno
play an atypical role. Among the most recent like
institution, is the only Italian Marine Protected Area as well
Mediterranean – not to border directly on any stretch of
it costs. In fact, the institutive law protects a rocky bank
completely submerged place several miles off the
Roman coast to represent an environment as widespread as
unknown in our seas. The frequenter of a Marine Area
Protected is often enchanted by the beauty of the sandy shores, by the
cliffs and cliffs, fascinated by the luxuriant vegetation
terrestrial and taken from seabirds. He knows little about the depths instead
and the organisms that inhabit them, fish, algae, corals and
of the Posidonia meadows, which are the real object of protection e
of the attentions that are often laboriously dedicated to them
by the managing bodies.
The Secche di Tor Paterno, with their remoteness and the
presenting difficulties to be explored, cause this
charm, a little mysterious, once again intriguing the citizen
"terragnolo" on the true essence of the sea and the treasures it contains
like in a real casket. In a few years of careful management,
the Secche have recovered much of their original splendour,
when there were no trawls or boat anchors
they did not destroy the fragile and spectacular living organisms.
Today, the big schools of fish, the friendly groupers pulling up
curious to underwater visitors, the splendid sea eagles which
the colorful red gorgonians seem to fly over the rocky seabed,
testify how much the sea is able to recover from wounds
that man continues to inflict on him, if only he were offered it
chance and time.
The Marine Protected Area “Secche di Tor
Paterno” is located in the central Tyrrhenian Sea, about 12 km offshore
of the Lazio coast, near Torvaianica, a hamlet
tourist-bathing area of the Municipality of Pomezia. The first action of
protection which involved the area of the Secche di Tor Paterno
was the establishment of a biological protection zone (Decree of the Ministry
of the Merchant Navy no. 402/88), rather extensive and that
it also partially concerned the current Marine Protected Area.
This form of protection was born with the intention of rationalizing
an economic activity, fishing, and not with the purpose of protecting
a particular ecosystem or the animal and plant species that make it up
they populated. Undoubtedly, such a form of protection had
however a beneficial effect also on the entire ecosystem of
stretch of sea to which it extended because it decreased the impact of the
fishing, due not only to the taking of fish species but also
navigation and anchoring.
