MANZU' MUSEUM IN ARDEA
The world of Manzù, one of the most important contemporary Italian artists
The world of Manzù
Few people know that the municipality of Ardea houses the collection of one of the most important contemporary Italian artists, Giacomo Manzoni, better known as Manzù.
The "Giacomo Manzù" Museum is a space conceived and wanted by the sculptor from Bergamo and his wife Inge Schabel.
The Amici di Manzù Collection includes about ninety sculptures (we note: the series of “Cardinals”, “Passo di danza”, “Pattinatrice”, “Striptease”, “Lovers”), 330 graphic works (including drawings, engravings and theatrical sketches) and the preparatory bas-reliefs for the doors of the Cathedral of Salzburg and Rotterdam.
The Collection was inaugurated in 1969, all the works were donated by the Master to the Italian State in 1979, while the opening of the Museum to the public dates back to 1981.
Until the beginning of 2021, the artist was buried in the garden of the Museum. After a legal battle between the Municipality of Ardea and his children Giulia and Mileto Manzoni, the body was removed from the tomb and, after being cremated, the ashes were buried in the family home, in the area known today as Colle Manzù.
On 17 January 2023, on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of Manzù's death, two new acquisitions by the Museum were presented, "Little girl on the chair" and "Study for a large portrait of a lady (Alice Lampugnani)".
“Vivere il Territorio” is a project of “Viaggio o Son Desta?”.
