GARDENS OF NINFA
The Garden of Ninfa is a natural monument of the Italian Republic located in the municipality of Cisterna di Latina.
From the Appia, the via Ninfina leads to this extraordinary site, a natural and historic monument at the same time: an area of about 8 hectares of delightful English garden, crossed by the river Ninfa, includes – being in turn included in a certain sense – the ruins of a medieval city abandoned in the 1600s due to malaria. The name refers to the cult of the nymphs and to the small temple built in Roman times next to the limestone springs of the river.
The garden of Ninfa presents itself as a wonderful strip of nature educated according to essentially aesthetic criteria, colors of flowers, leaves and bark, plant posture, combinations of times and seasons; the unifying element is water, which multiplies from the river (and from the lake into which it flows) into streams and bubbling waterfalls. Shady paths and paths open up continuously varied perspectives involving about 2000 plant species, rare, historical, exotic, common: cherry trees and bamboo groves, maples and camellias, magnolias and ornamental apple trees, viburnums and ancient roses, pines and lavender. Colors, lights, sounds, scents contribute to the experience. The geometric Hortus conclusus recovered in the 1600s includes a citrus grove, fountains and basins with swans.
To see Ninfa from above – the lake, tower and castle, the Pantanello ponds – you need to stop along the hairpin bends that go up to Norma. Oasi di Ninfa Managed with criteria that put the conservation of nature before fruition, the Oasis is open according to a seasonal calendar and with guided tours lasting about an hour.
In addition to the Gardens of Ninfa, we advise you to visit the vicenae Norma and Sermoneta.
